What is Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding is a modern, minimally invasive dental technique used to improve the appearance of natural teeth by concealing various imperfections. This procedure is ideal for addressing issues such as chipped or cracked teeth, uneven spacing, irregularly shaped or sized teeth, and minor misalignments.

The process involves applying a strong composite resin material to the teeth, which is then carefully shaped and polished. The composite material is shade-matched to your natural teeth, ensuring a seamless and natural-looking result.

How is Composite Bonding Done?

The composite bonding procedure is straightforward and typically completed in a single visit. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown:

  1. Preparation: The surface of your tooth is prepared using an etchant gel, which helps the bonding material adhere effectively. A bonding agent is then applied to the tooth.
  2. Application: A tooth-coloured composite resin is applied in small increments. We use different shades of resin to closely match the natural colour and translucency of your teeth. Then carefully sculpting it to achieve the desired shape and contour.
  3. Curing: Once the composite material is in place, a special ultraviolet (UV) light is used to harden and set the resin.
  4. Finishing Touches: After the material has set, the bonded area is polished to a high shine, and the shape is refined to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.

Can I Whiten Composite Bonding?

It’s important to note that traditional tooth-whitening gels do not affect composite resin. Therefore, any composite bonding will not whiten along with your natural teeth. For this reason, we recommend that patients undergo tooth whitening before having composite bonding done. This way, the composite material can be matched to the desired shade of your natural teeth.

How Long Will it Last?

Composite bonding can typically last around five years with proper care. However, because the composite material is softer than natural tooth enamel, it is more susceptible to wear and discoloration over time. To maintain the appearance of your composite bonding, it’s advisable to avoid foods and drinks that can cause staining, such as red wine and curry, as well as habits like smoking.

Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene practices will also help ensure the longevity of your composite bonding.
